Essay#3 Draft#2

Li,Chenchen

Dear Mayor,
I understand that you have to choose an option to help the city. You are trying to decide between building a homeless shelter and building a shopping mall. Your decision is important because New York City has the most homeless people in the U.S. This will be a big help for the economy of our city. So your option is important for New York. I believe that building a homeless shelter is better because it will provide jobs, provide education and lessen the numbers of crimes.

Building a homeless shelter is good for New York City because it will increase jobs. First of all, it can provide jobs for construction workers. In order to build the shelter, we will need many different workers. We need engineers, carpenters, plumbers, painters and electricians. Currently the unemployment rate is very high. Hiring people to build shelter can lower the unemployment rate. Secondly, there are some homeless people who need help from social workers. They need help for their health and lessons. Social workers can get their job in the shelter, helping homeless people. A homeless shelter is the place they can work after they finish school. They can practice their service in homeless shelter by helping the Homeless. Finally, it will help to give chance for doctors and nurses to work. Homeless people need medical attentions, because the Homeless do not have healthy bodies. So doctors and nurses could offer their services. The shelter can provide job for the doctors and nurses who are in training or finish school. A homeless shelter provides many different jobs.

Building a homeless shelter is good for New York City because it helps the homeless people’s education. First of all, it can provide the opportunity to learn how to read and write. Often, Homeless people cannot read and write because they didn’t go to school before. After they learn to read and write, they can help the community and get a job. They can find job by writing resume for jobs or find job by read the newspaper. They can volunteer to clean streets and do works at the office in the community. And when they get job, it can increases the economy. Also their lives will become better after they get salary. They can buy the stuffs for their need or eat. Secondly, homeless people can learn job skills in the shelter. They learn job skill such as computer, technical, and medical skills. The company or many stores will need these people who have the specific skills. So they can get a job easily. Finally, homeless people will have health education. Homeless people can take health class and learn how to avoid HIV, AIDS and other infections. This will help our city to decrease the illness. Because of this our city will save money on the medical spending. Homeless people can have different educations in the homeless shelter.

Building a homeless shelter is good for New York City because it will lessen the numbers of crimes. First of all, murder will be lowered because they get help and education from the social workers in the shelter. They learn the laws and rules of the society. So they will be aware of doing something illegal. Also many homeless people become the victims of murder, because they live in the street. So the Homeless can live in the shelter to get protection from the murderers. Secondly, there will be fewer numbers of robberies. Many homeless people are forced to rob people’s money because they don't have place to live and food to eat. So homeless shelter will provide them a warm place to live and give them food to eat. They will realize that they should not rob people to get money and they should get a job to improve their lives. Finally, it will stop the homeless people take drugs. The social workers help them to get off of drugs. They teach the Homeless about the risk of taking drugs and provide medical care for them. Due to this, the Homeless will know the dangers of taking drug and their bodies become healthy to fight addiction. This makes homeless people to have no addiction on drug. A homeless shelter can reduce the numbers of the crimes.

Building a homeless shelter is a better choice to consider because it will provide jobs, provide education and lessen the numbers of crimes. I think building a homeless shelter can make a big impact and improve our New York City.

Li, Chenchen

My Biography

My name is Li,Chenchen. I am from China. My family has lived there for about 40 years. I lived in a city in south of China called WenZhou. It is half as big as New York City. It is a financial city. Our city had a industrial zone for the many companies to make products. If you went to my city, you would see the Ou-river, the small island that has amusement park in there, seaport, many buildings and houses from an airplane.

I have a small family. There are four people in my family, but I have many relatives. My father has three brothers and one sister. We stay close together. My family and I had parties once a month to celebrate and gather together. Especially in Chinese New Year, my family visits my cousin’s house in NYC. In our tradition, the adults usually gave “red envelope” to the kids which have money inside. There are many people like my age I can play with. My uncles will buy snack, drinks and foods for cooking. We have party in the backyard of his house and play video games and other games. We have a lot fun there.

My father is fun person. He didn't go to middle school when he was young. But he always shows off when he knows some English words. I remember the time we watch TV, the people speak a word “forget”. He said out the word not properly: ‘“Forget”! I know this word. It’s easy.” Then my sister laughed at him. My mother is a kind and talkative person. When we move to a new neighborhood in NYC, she communicates with the neighbors near our house or asks them if she can help when they meet. She makes good friends with them. She gave foods call the “moon cake” to the neighbors on Chinese holidays. I have a young sister. She was born in the US. She is nine years old. She speaks English in school and at home. She annoys me when she leave a mess of the house. So I have to clean the house for her. Sometime she taught me English and I taught her Chinese.

My neighborhood is small in WenZhou. There were most of houses in my neighborhood. I know all the neighbors in my neighborhood. When I was a little boy, I always went to their house to play. They invite my family to their house for New Year party. My house was a Stoned Three-floor house. In 1st floor, it is the kitchen. The house has front door and back door. There are two stairs can go to the upstairs from either the front or back of the house. The second and third floors have living rooms. I could play hide and seek with my friends in the neighborhood. I like to hide under the bed. They can find me if I show up by myself.

The most important person is my mother. She came to the US when I was 10 years old. I missed her so much. When I came to the US, my mother took me to register for school and helped me to know our neighborhood in the NYC. She takes me to the supermarket, parks and restaurants. These places are different from China because in china we don’t have a complicated system of subway and we have different style of supermarket and restaurants. I needed to know the customs for living in US. In US, people have different traditions on the holidays. So I can adapt the live in U.S. She makes me to become more independent. She let me bought foods from supermarkets and cook by myself. I live with my parents and sister. We talk every day.

My father and mother moved to the US in 2000. They wanted to make a better life in the US. I came to here in 2005. I felt wonderful about the idea of coming here, because everything looks new to me. Many races of people live together and the different ways of life that I need to learn. Right now, I feel more adapted in US, because I have lived in here for four years.

In my plans for education, I plan to graduate from college and be an engineer or the people manage hotel. I will pass all the classes in college to complete it. CLIP helps me to fit in the college course and improve my listening, writing and speaking skills in English. I need to work on my English hardly to help me in future, because I am living in the US.
